ELEMENTARY STUDENTS FORM A GRIZZLY GOVERNMENT!

Talk about democracy in action…….one day in September our principal Mr. Farrell was chatting with some grade 5 girls about ideas for our school.  One of the girls said, “We should form our own government” and Ms. Lowe put the political wheels in motion.

The idea was pitched to students and the race was on!  We had an incredible ‘campaign week’ which culminated in a very successful vote on Friday – almost 100% voter turn out!  Students had to get their officially made ballot from a returning officer, go behind an Elections Canada screen to vote, and then get their ballot initialed before putting it in the ballot box.  It was a fun learning experience for all and NOW the work begins!

The Grizzly Government (G3) is:

                   5A – James Winther                  6L – Dani Welsh

                   5Au – Jaden McCormack         6S – Brittany Brezinski

                   5/6/7M – Randy Lindberg          5/6Z – Brittany Lapointe

The class representatives will meet with staff and administration regularly to have their voice heard and make Gibbons School the best place it can be!

                             Go Grizzly Government Go!!

Aboriginal Drumming Group

Gibbons
School has teamed up with Camilla School and the Alexander Band to form a drumming group.  On Friday, February 12, 2010 the Alexander Band gave a Drumming Demonstration at Gibbons School.  Ten students were selected to participate in a bi-cultural group with Camilla and Alexander to immerse themselves in Aboriginal culture and traditions, learning the symbolism behind the drum.  The students will be participating in an all day drum building activity in St. Albert on February 19th.  This activity will culminate with a drum performance near the end of the year.  We are very excited about this project and look forward to a year end Drum Performance at Gibbons School.
